One of the most difficult issues you will often face when it comes to laying a ceramic tile floor in a property especially in an old property is - Is the floor level?

There are many reasons why a  floor may not be level and this is why it will need to be removed prior to the new tiles being laid. 

Below we look at some of the reasons why an old floor may need to be removed.

1.  The floor may already have several layers of old flooring on it and if left will make the new one too tall, and this could cause not only the grout to crack, but also the tiles also to break. 

2.  It is important to remember that when a particleboard sub floor becomes wet it becomes spongy.  This again will cause movement in the new tile floor and could result in the tiles breaking.  Plus if the board remains wet it is the ideal place for bacteria to start breeding. 

Therefore, before you actually start to lay the tiles it is important that you have a clean and level surface at all times.  So you will need to remove any old flooring and then clean and make sure that all protruding nails and other objects have been removed.  Also, make sure that all floorboards are secure, so walk across it and if you notice any squeaking sounds then screw these down securely.  

When it comes to learning how to lay ceramic tiles the first thing one needs to remember is that the surface onto which they should be clean and level.  By spending, some time on making sure that the surface is correctly prepared will save you not only money, but also a lot of heartache in the future as well.
